Occidental College Upgrades to Onity Locking System

Occidental College Upgrades to Onity Locking System
Occidental College is upgrading its current locking system to Onity's Integra 5, a highly-specialized security lock designed for college campuses. The Integra 5 system offers individually customized access privileges to specific doors, along with any associated time and date parameters. The system greatly reduces the cost of installation by eliminating the need for expensive wiring to offline doors. Onity, one of the world's leading providers of electronic locking solutions, is a business of UTC Fire & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp.

Dan Artman, Onity Regional Sales Manager comments, “This project took two years to finalize. After pilot testing, the college selected a competitor's product due to integration with other campus platforms. However, Onity's door locks remained at the school and continually outperformed the installed product. The reliability of the Integra 5 system resulted in the displacement of the competitor's locks and the installation of Onity's locks throughout the residence halls.”

Occidental, a liberal arts college located in the Los Angeles area, has more than 2,000 students with almost three quarters living in the residence halls. One of the many factors involved in student housing is safety. The new Onity locking system is currently being installed in 13 residence halls and suites, several student teaching spaces and more than 50 labs. Installation is scheduled for completion this summer.

“Occidental College chose Onity because of the reliability of their products and service,” said Kyle Hyde, Assistant Director and Manager of Application Systems at Occidental College. “Onity's security system can manage up to 65,000 users, track activity reports on each lock and provide auditing activity for up to 1,184 events. This ensures additional safety in our residence halls and classrooms.”

Ideal for college campuses, the Onity Integra 5 system can - incorporate staff and/or student ID cards, handle up to 3,000 users per standalone lock and allow for individually customized access privileges.

“In addition to its flexibility, the Integra system makes secure management of the facility easier,” said Artman. “The system is PC-based and Windows compatible, fully integrates both off-line and on-line locks, provides entry activity reports by date, time and user, and allows automatic expiration of resident cards in individual doors.”
