Smiths Detection Wins $25.6 Million Contract for Canadian X-Ray Systems

Smiths Detection announced a US$25.6 million order from the Canadian Air Transportation Security Authority (CATSA) to provide advanced X-ray systems that will upgrade existing airport checkpoints. The Advanced Threat Identification X-ray (aTiX) devices can detect explosives automatically.

The CATSA purchase covers two sizes of X-ray systems, including the HI SCAN 6040 aTiX. Upgrading from earlier Smith Detection products, the order is intended to replace traditional single-view systems in airports across Canada. They will be deployed in the coming months.

The order also includes the brand new HI SCAN 7555 aTiX, the latest member of the Smiths Detection's aTiX range. Slightly larger than previous scanners, it can accommodate items such as strollers and larger carry-ons. The CATSA order represents the first deployment of the new HI SCAN 7555 aTiX system worldwide.

Cherif Rizkalla, President of Security and Inspection, Smiths Detection, said: “We are delighted to continue our long standing relationship with CATSA. Smiths Detection prides itself on continuously developing innovative solutions to improve checkpoint security. Our next-generation aTiX systems will enable more accuracy while improving traffic flow.”

Unlike conventional systems, aTiX captures multiple views of carry-on bags in a single sweep to provide more information about every piece of luggage. It also includes powerful software algorithms which help the operator detect potentially harmful items. This software can also be easily upgraded to detect evolving threats.

Smiths Detection is a provider of threat detection systems with multiple security technologies deployed at nearly 85 percent of the world's commercial airports.
