Smart Baljevac facility reopens, strengthening Gunnebo Safe Storage’s European manufacturing network

Smart Baljevac facility reopens, strengthening Gunnebo Safe Storage’s European manufacturing network
Gunnebo Safe Storage has reopened its modernised Primat manufacturing facility in Baljevac, Serbia, following a significant phase of investment.
Gunnebo Safe Storage has reopened its modernised Primat manufacturing facility in Baljevac, Serbia, following a significant phase of investment. Together with the company’s Maribor facility in Slovenia, the site now forms a central European hub to produce safes and safe storage solutions.

The redevelopment of the Baljevac site reflects a strategic focus on strengthening manufacturing capabilities to meet growing European demand for certified, high-quality safes and cabinets. The facility is designed to support both standardised production and customer-specific requirements, including tailored and customised solutions.

A core priority of the project has been the enhancement of health, safety, and overall working conditions. Upgrades to the production environment, combined with structured training and competence development programmes, are intended to support employee wellbeing while ensuring consistent operational standards.

Says Tanja Djokic, Manufacturing Director of Primat: “Reopening the Baljevac facility marks an important step forward in strengthening our manufacturing footprint in Europe. By investing in both advanced technologies and our people, we are building a future-ready operation that delivers consistent quality and supports sustainable growth.”

The investment includes the introduction of smart machinery and advanced automated sheet metal processing technologies. These are complemented by latest manufacturing systems aimed at improving production efficiency, traceability, and process control.

The production layout has been fully reconfigured to incorporate rail-guided assembly, enabling single-piece flow production. This approach is expected to improve throughput, reduce handling, and support quality consistency across product lines.

As part of the transformation, Gunnebo Safe Storage has introduced the Gunnebo Production System (GPS). GPS serves as the company’s operational framework for safe, sustainable, and efficient manufacturing, integrating principles of continuous improvement, standardisation, and workplace safety.

The site’s production capacity has been significantly expanded. Previously producing fewer than 1,000 incomplete units annually, the facility is now capable of manufacturing up to 15,000 high-quality graded products per year, with future scalability to approximately 30,000 units.

Tanja concluded: “With these developments, the Baljevac facility will play a key role in supporting regional supply chains and enhancing our ability to deliver certified security solutions across European markets. It creates a strong foundation for long-term operational excellence and with the combination of smart infrastructure, skilled teams and a clear production system, it allows us to respond effectively to customer needs while ensuring the highest standards of safety and quality.”
