Cloud first initiative takes flight: Brazilian airport upgrades to Milestone XProtect VMS for AWS

A major airport in Brazil, serving as a crucial connection to other parts of the country, faced the challenge of migrating their video security system to the cloud in support of the organization's Cloud First initiative. With a modern and spacious terminal building, over 25 boarding gates, and a multitude of amenities and services catering to more than 15 million travelers annually, the airport needed a robust and reliable solution to accommodate the storage and management requirements of their expansive video surveillance system.
  • Requirement to move 100% of video management and storage to AWS for cost savings, efficiency, and data security.
  • Over 1,000 cameras in various locations throughout the airport.
  • Need to retain video data for as long as 200 days.

Solution

The partner integrator team implemented Milestone XProtect VMS for AWS, the only VMS available on AWS that could supply the airport’s needs and requirements in the cloud, as a part of their migration. Initially hesitant to adopt the new system, the airport quickly found it to be reliable, easy to deploy, and user-friendly. In partnership with Milestone, the airport also utilized Tiger Surveillance Bridge to archive video data in AWS S3 storage for a specified period before moving it to Glacier Storage, with that, the airport could optimize storage spend while maintaining precise requirements for their surveillance system.
  • Milestone XProtect VMS for AWS deployed as the video security solution.
  • Over 1,000 cameras, multiple XProtect smart clients, and required gateway hardware remain on-premises.
  • Tiger Surveillance Bridge solution used for archiving video data to AWS S3 and Glacier Storage.
  • Uses the Tiger Surveillance Bridge software plugin within the Milestone VMS for seamless AWS integration and storage economy.

Results

The transition to Milestone XProtect on AWS proved to be a significant improvement over the airport's previous on-premises system, with no on-premises video management, servers, or storage remaining. The airport benefited from AWS's tiered pricing structure, providing cost savings in addition to improved efficiency and data security. Live video monitoring and playback is smooth and responsive with very low latency. The cloud-based system's scalability and flexibility allowed the airport to accommodate various camera types and storage needs.
  • Complete migration to AWS, fulfilling the Cloud First initiative.
  • Improved cost savings, efficiency, and data security.
  • Smooth and responsive live video monitoring and playback.
  • Scalable and flexible system to accommodate diverse camera and storage needs.
  • Successful proof of concept deployment with assistance from AWS.
The successful integration of Milestone XProtect VMS for AWS at the Brazilian airport demonstrates the power of collaborative partnerships and innovative technology. This cloud-based solution has enhanced security operations, streamlined processes, and showcased the airport's commitment to embracing a Cloud First approach, setting a new standard for modern airport security systems.
