Some of Asia's largest economies are set to become drivers of growth for the global security industry in the coming years. With improved standards of living and increased security concerns, demand in the continent is expanding at a quick pace.

Not surprisingly, most major solution providers have solid views on the Asian market. a&s recently interviewed Jay Jeong, GM of Sales Team in Americas and Asia at IDIS, to know more about the company's performance in 2015 and what it expects in 2016.

a&s:What are some of the major factors that have influenced the South and Southeast Asian security industry in 2015?

Jeong:Once such incident that continues to influence the industry is the Southeast Asian haze, which has severely impacted Indonesia and neighboring countries. While there are still inter-government related issues to be overcome, all countries effected know that the prevention of land clearing fires causing the pollution is now critical with mitigation estimated to cost up US$47 billion. One potential prevention and detection method being explored is the use of thermal imaging cameras combined with high resolution PTZ functionality and only a few players in the industry are able to offer this type of complete solution.

Despite political instability, Thailand is considered one of the safest countries in the region, yet the tragic bombing of the Erawan Shrine in Bangkok, killing 20 people and injuring 125, put security firmly back on the national agenda. While the suspect was captured on surveillance footage, which was broadcast globally, the image quality was poor and an arrest was not made until a month after the incident. As a result, we have seen a sharp increase in demand for HD video surveillance across all industry segments, and in particular for city wide surveillance solutions.

a&s:Securities markets in which of the countries in South and Southeast Asia have done well in 2015?

Jeong:Singapore has been the strongest performing country for us in terms of demand for high performance and high quality surveillance, which is a great fit for IDIS as our solutions are best placed to address these requirements. It has not been a great year in Indonesia due to currency depreciation and all import based businesses (not just security) have been seriously impact. It's our belief we won't see an Indonesian recovery before end of next year.

a&s:Which of the countries in the region are expected to see better growth for security industry in 2016? Why?

Jeong:Our pipeline shows that Singapore and Vietnam will be both remain strong with demand for surveillance driven by new planned government-funded construction. In addition, since Prime Minister Modi took control of the Indian government, there has been huge investment in infrastructure, which is continuing into next year and beyond, so we expect a very strong year in India.

a&s:Could you give some major achievements of your company in the region in 2015?

Jeong:We've opened sales channels in India, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Taiwan and the Philippines, which was a great achievement in just a year.
Building upon our success with IDIS DirectIP™, 2015 saw us launch our comprehensive IDIS total solution, all fully designed, developed and manufactured in-house. Our line up now includes an enterprise-level video management solution, IDIS Solution Suite™, and the addition of an analogue HD-over-coaxial system, DirectCX™, which is ideal for customers looking to leverage existing coaxial cabling and power lines, while still benefitting from IDIS signature high performance and quality.

a&s:Could you give an insight into your company's plans for the region in 2016?
