While small, Singapore is one of the most technology-advanced countries in the world, using sensors, analytics, and a variety of other solutions to make the city-state smarter and safer, said Patrick Lim, Director for Group Sales and Marketing at Ademco Security Group.

“Due to our small population, Singapore have always used technologies extensively in various applications, the most common example is our electronic road pricing system that regulates traffic patterns to avoid grid-locks on our roads,” Lim said. “There are sensors for air quality, rain fall and flash flood warnings.”

Video surveillance and other technologies also play an important role. “One of the key products has been IP cameras. High resolution cameras with video analytics have enabled big data collection at a distance,” he said. “However, advanced sensors, electronic locks, and complex identity management technologies have also become essential components of smart city projects.”

Various smart city trial initiatives have taken place in Singapore, and Ademco has been pretty active in this regard. “Ademco security group has been involved in a few intelligent city testbeds across the region. Most of our participation are directly with end users or relevant city authorities,” he said. “Our role usually involves studying with end users on the current challenges, projecting the desired results, designing an appropriate solution, testing the technologies, and conducting extensive pilots.”

“The longest study we did was over five years, conducting three pilots and refining the solution by integrating the latest technologies,” Lim added. “Our testbed involves smart precinct management that combines security and infocomm technologies for smarter resource management, intelligent asset protection, and public security.”
