The Delhi Police has been awarded US$6.5 million under the United Nations Women Safe City project, to enhance safety for women in the national capital.

‘UN Women Safe Cities' program in Delhi is part of the ‘UN Women Safe City Free of Violence Against Women Global Program'. Under this, the UN, with the assistance of World Bank, will finance the project.

The amount will be released to the Department of Electronics and Information Technology, who will, in coordination with the Delhi Police, spend it to procure electronic gadgets, to prevent crime against women and detect those involved in such crimes.

Delhi was included in the global program after the December 16, 2012, brutal gang rape and murder case of a young woman. “CCTV cameras, surveillance equipment and high-speed vehicles with emergency gadgets will be purchased with the sanctioned funds.

$2.4 million has already been granted to the Delhi Police in the first phase of the project,” a Ministry of Home Affairs official said, adding, “The overall objective of this program is to eliminate violence against women and girls.”

The project supports the local governments, police, and public services authorities, through UN women, with the aim of enabling women to be able to move about safely in cities.

It also intends to contribute to developing the capacity to guarantee women's safety in public spaces, including public transportation. Also, it will strengthen the implementation capacities of policies and laws meant to prevent sexual harassment and sexual violence in public spaces.
