Singapore's government has pledged US$80 million to support two major new projects to help develop low carbon technologies that boost the energy efficiency of buildings and data centers.

Yong Ying-I, co-chairwoman of the government's Energy Research Development and Demonstration executive committee, announced the funds that are designed to help boost energy security and slash carbon emissions for the idland state.

The two initiatives, the Building Energy Efficiency R&D Hub and the Green Data Center Research Hub Program, were announced alongside five new road maps that focus on slashing carbon emissions across the energy and industrial sectors.

Developed with academics and industry, the blueprints focus on areas that can deliver solutions for cutting carbon emissions and energy demand.

As well as data centers and buildings, the road maps aim to boost research and development for solar panels, carbon capture and storage, and industrial energy efficiency projects.

They are now expected to underpin Singapore's strategy for transitioning to a low carbon economy.
Buildings use about half of Singapore's electricity so the program is likely to focus on developing more energy efficient approaches to ventilation and air conditioning. Energy intensive data centers will also be encouraged to deploy more sustainable cooling and powering technologies.

In addition, the government is developing two more road maps, said Yong, one focusing on electric mobility and another on solid waste management.
