Suprema — Flexible and affordable access control for Asia

“The adaptation of modern access control is on the rise throughout Asia, but the preferences for the technology vary across countries,” said Brad Choi, Senior Sales Manager, Suprema.

He continued to say, “for example, we have observed that in developing countries in South East Asia, fingerprint scanning is the preferred biometrics technology because it is the less-expensive option. On the other hand, Japanese people enjoy the convenience of biometrics, but are concerned about personal hygiene, so they do not like fingerprint scanning where contact with the scanner is necessary. Rather, touch-less technologies like face- or vein-scanning are preferred.”

Choi pointed out that although face-scanning is reliable and convenient to use, one challenge remains is the lighting conditions — right now, face-scanning is most ideal for indoor implementation where lighting is easily maintained, but not so much for outdoors. To overcome this restriction, Suprema's face-recognition terminals, such as FaceStation, are equipped with its patented technology ‘Adaptive IR illumination.'

Commenting on the future trend, Choi said that access control is relatively conservative that “it took some time for the market to accept biometrics, so although there is a trend of using cloud technology, it will still need a while for more people to accept it once the concern for data breach and stability is solved.”

“One misconception for biometrics is that it is always expensive. With Suprema's terminals that work as individual intelligent controllers, less installation and maintenance cost is needed. In addition, cost-effective designs and decrease of price in key materials such as camera and LCD panel will contribute to affordability.”
