The Bangkok North Municipal Court will be the first to use tracking bracelets on people convicted of drink driving and speeding, instead of allowing them to do community service, court Chief Justice Surajit Sriboonma says.

Chief Justice Surajit yesterday said he discussed the matter with the Probation Department and they decided security bracelets will be used on offenders convicted by the Bangkok North Municipal Court.

It is unclear when the electronic monitoring device will be launched.

The offenders will be made to wear the security bracelets during their home detention period and they will be barred from leaving home between 10pm and 4am for seven days.

The devices, to be worn around the ankle, transmit information on the offenders' whereabouts to the Probation Department. The transmissions are beamed from a pager-sized electronic pad attached to the bracelet.

The electronic monitoring tags fitted to offenders enable authorities to track their position through the use of GPS technology and location verification units.

If the wearers leave their confinement within the prohibited time, an alarm will sound. If the offenders sever the ankle strap or damage the device, they would not be able to put it back together.

About 200 tracking bracelets will be allocated to the Bangkok North Municipal Court.

The Justice Ministry said if the scheme proves successful, it could be extended to prisoners held by the Corrections Department to ease overcrowding at prisons.
