The Ahmedabad police wants to network of surveillance cameras on railway platforms. Trains are preferred by criminals for visiting the state and then escaping after committing crimes. Surveillance cameras installed on platforms would help identify criminals and also help prevent crimes on the premises of the railway stations.

A senior official of the Government Railway Police (GRP) said that as of now, major railway stations such as those at Kalupur and Maninagar have less than 10 cameras to safeguard the entire premises.

"We have written to the Western Railways authorities to install at least 72 cameras at strategic locations, including entry and exit points of railway stations, ticket counters and the storage area so that suspects can be identified after any major crime. As railway station is the property of the Western Railways, we cannot start installation of cameras on our own," said the GRP official.

Kalupur railway station was targeted by terrorists in 2006 when a bomb blast ripped apart the station and injured more than 10 people. Officials said that apart from Ahmedabad, the surveillance network project would cover all the major railway stations, including Vadodara and Surat.

Bids invited for surveillance cameras at police stations:
The state police have initiated the process of inviting bids for surveillance network at all police stations in the state. The tender, issued earlier last month, intends to get bidders for installation and maintenance of high-quality surveillance cameras at the police stations. Some police districts have already implemented the initiative while many have resorted to public-private partnership (PPP) for the time being.
