Taiwanese car accessory maker Papago wants to have its smart tire-pressure monitoring system available in Japan by the end of this year. Such smart monitors could soon become mandatory in Japan and Papago is aiming to have its GoSafe TPMS be the go-to device for cars in Japan.

The system works by attaching sensors onto tires that send warnings of abnormal pressure to a central monitoring device.

Papago's system is available in two types: The 500BT uses Bluetooth to connect to a smartphone app that is used as the monitoring unit; and the 700 model, which uses a proprietary drive recorder as a receiver.

Tire pressure greatly affects driving performance. If pressure is too low, tires can wear down too quickly on the edges. If pressure is too high, the center of the tire wears too quickly. Both increase the risk of accidents.
Air pressure monitoring systems are already mandatory in Europe and the U.S. Automobile industry stakeholders in Japan have just started discussing its requirement in the country's cars.

Papago mostly makes car navigation systems and drive recorders. Founded in 2001, the company does business in numerous countries, including Thailand and Singapore. It was listed on the Taiwanese stock market in 2011, and started operations in Japan in 2012 under the subsidiary Papago Japan.
