The Philippine National Railways (PNR) has extended its commuter train service to Sta. Rosa, Laguna and inaugurated new stations in Muntinlupa, San Pedro, and Sta. Rosa.
PNR general manager Joseph Allan Dilay said Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya rode the South line extension service on Sunday to assess and inspect the Tutuban to Sta. Rosa line.
The 43.81 kilometer-South line extension has 23 stations.
PNR said ridership is currently at 60,000 passengers a day. They are expecting a 5 to 10% increase in ridership due to the service extension.
Transportation Secretary Jun Abaya said there is also a plan to further extend the commuter train service up to Calamba.
Abaya said the government has a priority list to help solve the severe traffic congestion in Metro Manila and its surrounding municipalities.
He added that the PNR is providing an alternative mode of transport in the land transport sector through the extension of the Metro South Commuter Train service.
The government also wants to extend train service up to Malolos, Bulacan in the North.
