In-vehicle storage for surveillance is going through a transition stage as more end users are interested in upgrading from analog to network surveillance systems. To end users, the surveillance system should not serve merely as an evidence recorder that only proves its value when incidents happen. Rather, the surveillance system should be a comprehensive tool offering real-time viewing among other features, to actualize greater convenience and improvements in management.

Diane Chen, PR Coordinator of EverFocus Electronics, shared that when providing a surveillance system to a school bus, the current/future trend is to incorporate video monitoring with smart card and SMS applications, so that parents could be promptly notified on their cellphone when the children get on/off the bus, and when they check in/out of school.

Certain methods of transportation such as public buses and school buses rarely implement a full-on network surveillance system due to budget concerns, but also, to avoid unnecessary rewiring of cables. As a result, most applications still employ hybrid NVRs/DVRs.

Chen said that considering clients' purpose and budgets, EverFocus would recommend a mixed application with analog cameras mounted near the doors for short-range recording and network cameras placed at the front and tail ends of a vehicle for clearer image rendition, covering a longer and wider range.

Integrating functions as smart card, emergency alarms, or the “self-check” notification about incidents or malfunctions would best be customized by local system integrators.
