a&s organized an industry gathering, the Korean Security Symposium 2013, in Seoul earlier this month, with 51 companies and 72 representatives in attendance. At this year's event, the objective was to share intelligence on major Taiwanese and Chinese manufacturers' recent achievements, as well as the latest R&D trend in IP-based video surveillance.

On opening the event, Parson Lee, MD of Messe Frankfurt New Era Business Media, indicated that among the 2013 Security 50 companies, 11 were Korean; and compared to the previous year's performance, most enjoyed revenue growth, with HDPro, Suprema and Win4Net even demonstrating double-digit growth. The Korean companies that attended the event were optimistic about 2014 and have become overwhelmingly committed to investing in fortifying their IP lineup. In addition to their fast-growing domestic market, they are also looking at further pursuing the European, American and Russian markets.

On the China front, Hikvision Digital Technology and Dahua Technology each had moved up one place in the 2013 a&s ranking, to 4th and 9th respectively. Overall, it has been estimated that there are approximately 600 authentic manufacturers in the Chinese video surveillance supply chain, which could be categorized into four tiers: Tier 1 with Hikvision and Dahua; Tier 2 with TVT, ZK Teco, Tiandy, Sunell and perhaps five others; Tier 3 with Qunanjie, Qihan, LSVT, Dowse among a total of approximately 20. Brazil, Eastern Europe and Russia stand out in the export markets.

Taiwanese manufacturers' development could be dichotomized: IP specialists, with renowned front-end companies like Vivotek, solution-driven Geovision and back-end platforms from the likes of Nuuo and Qnap; versus CCTV power players that turned IP, such as Avtech, Dynacolor, EverFocus and LILIN. To enhance brand value and visibility, many are working with system integrators to target specific vertical segments and requirements. Export activities are especially noteworthy in emerging and ASEAN markets.

With respect to 2014 surveillance trends, be it IP, HD-SDI or analog, specs and developments will revolve around H.265 compression, 1080P at 30/60 fps (or even 120 fps), 5 megapixels at 30 fps, "true" WDR/BLC, star light CMOS performance, de-fog, digital zoom, 2-D/3-D DNR upgrades, image stabilization, and facial recognition and VCA. Fierce competition can be expected in cost-effectiveness, ease of installation and operation, total integration (vertical solutions versus stand-alone products), mobile/remote access control, system self-diagnostics, residential and cloud-based applications, further painting an all-IP future.
