Starting as an aluminum window reseller, SMC Group entered the Thai security scene in 2000, after the real estate market slumped following the Asian financial crisis. Having successfully commissioned security systems throughout its stores, SMC began turning its own security implementation into something resalable. Selling surveillance equipment was not easy as average price was high and requirements were unclear (low awareness). However, SMC adapted quickly and found its groove via existing clients' word of mouth and sustained high profits.

One of SMC's strengths is integration. The core starts with the DVR; alarm events received by the DVR can be configured to take actions, such as automatic notifications or archiving specific events so that corresponding video clips can be easily retrieved later on. “For instance, during a convenience store's opening hours, if someone crosses a restricted area, the triggered alarm would be automatically sent to the owner or security staff via text messaging. During off hours, speed domes and preset tours could save guard cost up to US$1,000 per month.” said Kittichai Samittiwuttiku, President. “Through PoS integration, event reports can be further utilized for immediate management or cash optimization.”

SMC established another branch in 2012, targeting government and large integration projects. With slashed funding and delayed bidding in 2013, SMC is determined to offer more variety. “Reaching maturity, IP-based solutions are becoming more affordable and simple to use; as such, city surveillance, education and government projects are embracing IP,” Samittiwuttiku said. “Currently, more than 7,000 townships in Thailand are undergoing safe-city projects; some are already underway while 3,000 or so are in the planning phase. The key to meeting this increasing demand and sustaining profitability lies in the unique ability to provide complete but affordable packages, with reliable equipment, well-supported software, round-the-clock service, and integration/scalability capability.”
