According to the Philippines' Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC), the President's Office has approved the contract for Metro Manila Skyway (MMS) Stage 3 project, which will connect Southern Luzon Expressway to Northern Luzon Expressway. The project is estimated at US$62 million and will be overseen by the DOTC and the Toll Regulatory Board.
The new road is expected to help decongest EDSA, an important freeway in the country, and other major roads to reduce travel time from Buendia to Balintawak, from the usual two hours to 15 minutes. The MMS, estimated to be completed in three years, is approximately 14.2 km in length, and work will commence before the end of 2014. DOTC Secretary Joseph Emilio Aguinaldo Abaya said that the first section from Buendia to Nagahan may start service by early 2016.
Secretary Abaya also added, “Our government is committed to [building] infrastructure that will ease traffic congestion and enhance economic opportunities; [and] the Skyway project will do both.”
