Amazon leads the U.S. smart speaker market: Strategic Analytics

Amazon leads the U.S. smart speaker market: Strategic Analytics
Amazon’s Echo devices accounted for 63% of smart speakers in use in the U.S., followed by Google Home’s 17% and Apple HomePod’s 4%, according to a survey recently conducted by research firm Strategic Analytics.
Amazon’s Echo devices accounted for 63% of smart speakers in use in the U.S., followed by Google Home’s 17% and Apple HomePod’s 4%, according to a survey recently conducted by research firm Strategic Analytics.

By model type, the pioneer and classic Amazon Echo is the most popular smart speaker in the U.S., representing 23% of all smart speakers in use. Amazon Echo is followed by the US$50 and often-on-discount Amazon Echo Dot (21%), Google Home (8%), Google Home Mini (7%) and Amazon Echo Plus (5%).

“Amazon and Google may dominate today’s market, but this will not always be the case. Many consumers are ready to consider alternative brands, assuming they meet the high expectations identified in this study, including high quality audio, superior design and device compatibility,” says David Watkins, director of Smart Speakers at Strategy Analytics, in a statement.

The survey did ask the respondents to name one brand that they would choose for their next smart speaker purchase - 54% of them said big names like Amazon, Google and Apple. It means that almost half of the market welcomes other brands such as Bose, Samsung and Sonos.

Having more than one smart speaker is also trending among U.S. households, according to the survey. 58% of the respondents said they had two or more smart speakers at home. 62% said they have the device in the living room, 41% in the bedroom, 39% in the kitchen and 12% in the bathroom.

Up to 88% of respondents who have smart speakers own at least one Amazon smart speaker, and 31% own at least one Google smart speaker.

The survey by Strategic Analytics was conducted online with 1,011 users who own smart speakers in the U.S. between July and August, 2018.
