Netgear brings upgraded Arlo Pro 2 camera with 1080p recording
Netgear has introduced its second-generation security camera Arlo Pro 2, which appears to be a refinement, rather than innovation, compared with the previous model. The biggest improvement is that the Arlo Pro 2 features a 1080p image sensor, up from 720p of the previous version.
Netgear has introduced its second-generation security camera Arlo Pro 2, which appears to be a refinement, rather than innovation, compared with the previous model. The biggest improvement is that the Arlo Pro 2 features a 1080p image sensor, up from 720p of the previous version.

Some new features come with the wire. Connecting to a power supply, the Arlo Pro 2 allows users to perform continuous video recording (CVR), making it function like a traditional security camera. However, users are required to subscribe to Netgear’s CVR cloud storage plan to enable the feature.

A new “Look Back” feature will function only if the camera is connected to power. It constantly pre-records three seconds of footage. The camera will detect motions and record, to let users see footage three seconds before the action takes place.

While the new model records higher-quality video, Netgear’s cloud storage plan stays unchanged – seven days of free cloud storage. Users have the option to extend the storage of 24/7 recordings for 14 to 60 days, on a plan between US$99 and US$299 per year.

The Arlo Pro 2 has the same visual design from the previous model. It aims to be used both indoor and outdoor, thanks to its weatherproof design and rechargeable battery that can last six months long.

While the Arlo Pro 2 requires a base station, which monitors Wi-Fi traffic and pings the camera while necessary, it’s also backward compatible with the existing Arlo Pro system. In other words, users can use the same base station and old cameras when adding a new model. It’s also compatible with other accessories like batteries.

Voice-control integration is also available on the new model. The Arlo Pro 2 supports Alexa integration, allowing users to watch live video feeds on an Echo Show or Fire TV. It also works with Google Assistant but without visual presentation.

The Arlo Pro 2 is available now for US$220 and the previous model is also on sale at a lower price.
