Ring, a smart doorbell maker acquired by Amazon, is taking pre-orders for its DIY home security system, Ring Alarm, which will start shipping on July 4.
Ring’s home security system was first announced last October, and it was called Ring Protect then. A lawsuit with ADT, however, caused a delay and was rebranded. The product is now finally ready to ship to homeowners.
Ring Alarm comes with one motion sensor, one door/window sensor, one base station, a keypad and a range extender. The whole system costs US$199 while an additional door/window sensor costs US$20 and an additional motion sensor costs US$30.
Although one motion sensor and one door/window sensor may not be sufficient to cover a whole home, the low price of Ring Alarm is still attractive compared to Nest’s US$399 home security system, which just had a price cut from the original US$499.
Ring Alarm works with Ring’s video doorbell and Floodlight and Spotlight Cam. When these devices detect unusual activities, the alarm will be turned on and users will receive alerts on their mobile devices.
Ring Alarm’s base station is also compatible with First Alert’s smoke and carbon monoxide alarm.
Ring offers a subscription plan with US$10 monthly fees for homeowners who want to have advanced home security features. The Ring Protect Plus Plan provides a 24/7 professional monitoring service, a backup LTE cellular service, unlimited cloud video storage and 10% off on product purchases on the Ring website.
Along with the announcement, Ring introduced the Flood & Freeze Sensor and the Dome Siren with 10 different chimes and volume levels, so that homeowners can know which sensors are activated.
Amazon officially acquired Ring in February. Besides a price cut on Ring’s first doorbell cam, Amazon hasn’t announced any integration with Ring’s products for Amazon’s home delivery service or security cameras.
