It is a platform that gets data off from devices. Trillions of terabytes of data is reportedly being locked up and has no ways to get out across the world. The data on unconnected devices are also valuable in many ways, and Cisco’s new platform aims to resolve the issue.
Cisco Kinetic runs on Cisco Catalyst 9000 switches, its existing router switching infrastructure, and all the hardware that’s coming out of Cisco. It makes it easier for manufacturers to adopt the new service.
The new platform also aims to speed up the time between proof of concept and IoT implementation by consumers.
The company earlier unveiled the Control Center 7.0 for Cisco Japer, which can perform tasks relating to IoT traffic segmentation, security and support for low-power end points. It is the platform’s first major upgrade after Jasper was purchased for $1.4 billion in February 2016.
Cisco Jasper has added several new features for the Control Center 7.0. First, the platform provides IoT connectivity for many low-power WAN technologies, such as NB-IoT and LTE-M. U.S. telecom giant AT&T, which has deployed LTE-M widely in the country, just signed an exclusive deal with Cisco to manage its IoT devices.
Other features include integration with Cisco’s Umbrella cloud security platform to protect IoT devices from malware and security attacks; analytic tools that allow customers to see everything devices have done on the network; and traffic segmentation that helps service providers charge differently based on the type of IoT services used.
According to Cisco, the platform currently manages more than 43 million IoT devices and more than 1.5 million new devices are added every month.
