New York-based tech company, Eight, has announced a new smart mattress product to answer the company’s mission of improving the way people sleep.
The smart mattress is able to connect with other smart home devices, such as thermostat, lights and coffee makers, through a smartphone app. For example, when the bed detects the user waking up and leaving the bed in the morning, it can communicate with the smart coffee makers to start brewing coffee and with Philips Hue lights to turn the light on in the livingroom.
The mattress communicates with other connected devices via IFTTT protocol. Besides two above applications, users with Amazon Alexa-enabled devices at home can also turn on bed warming via voice commands.
There are five layers inside the smart mattress – four layers of high-density foam and one technology layer with built-in sensors tracking the user’s sleep and adjusting temperature independently of each side of the mattress.
The sensors can track tossing, turning, breathing rate, sleeping time, sleeping quality and bedroom environmental conditions, including bed and air temperature. The user can gather and analyze the data to create sleeping patterns and suggestions to improve the sleeping quality from the mobile app. Also, the data can be exported to other healthcare applications such as Apple and Google's health apps.
Based on the history information, the mobile app can also wake users up with the alarms which are created based on their sleeping cycles.
The company was founded in 2014 and launched its first product the ‘Eight Sleep Tracker’ smart bed cover the next year. According to the company, the smart bed cover has been used by 12,000 people across 67 countries and tracked more than 1.8 million hours of sleeping data. From these information, the company has gained a better understanding of what type of mattress can bring people the better sleep. That’s how the latest product was developed.
Eight’s smart mattress is now available from the company’s website and the price starts at $950. U.S. customers get free shipping and 100-day trial with free returns.
