Consumers are having headaches with security cameras in the market, according to Eufy, which says that complicated installation process, short battery life for wire-free models, excessive false alarms and expensive monthly subscription fees are some of the pain points. EverCam is born to solve these problems, Eufy said.
The camera features a 13,400mAh battery, which is said to be able to last one year under active usage and three years in standby mode. It also features the Qualcomm QuickCharge 3.0 technology, allowing full battery power generation in three hours. Eufy aims to create a “real wire-free security camera” with the more powerful battery.
The company also claims that the camera will send 95-percent fewer false alarms to homeowners’ phones, compared with other security cameras on the market. It is able to do so with a three-step detection process.
The camera first uses motion and heat sensors to detect movement of objects that generate heat. As such, a baseball rolling from the next door’s neighbors won’t trigger the system. Secondly, the camera uses artificial intelligence (AI) to identify the shape of moving objects and can differentiate pets from a human body.
Lastly, the facial recognition technology will learn human faces over time and remember household members’ faces. When a known person appears, homeowners will receive alerts from the camera.
EverCam offers relatively easy installation process. A magnetic base can be mounted to any flat surface, and homeowners may stick the camera to the base with built-in magnets.
The EverCam works with a Security HomeBase hub, which uses AES 128-bit encryption and provides local storage. After connecting the hub to a Wi-Fi router, the hub will continuously work with up to 16 cameras over low-frequency wireless signals, but will switch to Wi-Fi connection once one camera starts recording.
Camera footage will be stored in the local 16GB microSD card, and the footage will be overwritten with new ones when the storage card is full. Homeowners can also opt in for Eufy’s cloud storage plan for US$3 per month. Regardless of using subscription plans or not, users can see live video streaming from a mobile app.
In terms of camera specs, EverCam features 1080p HD video, IP66 weather-proof, night vision up to 33-feet and built-in microphone and speaker. The Security HomeBase hub has a 5,000mAh battery built-in, ensuring the camera can still function during a power outage.
The camera also features a built-in alarm system. When the camera is removed from the mount or a break-in is suspected to have occurred, a 100-decibel anti-theft alarm will be activated. Homeowners may also purchase sensors, which work with the whole ecosystem, to alert users when a door or window is opened.
Eufy’s EverCam campaign reached its Kickstarter fundraising goal in a short period of time. The product will be shipped starting in September for US$329 or US$499 in a set of two. The company will also add Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa and IFTTT support to the device.
