Microsoft to turn Windows 10 PC into smart home hub

After the software update in September, PCs installed with Windows 10 will serve as smart hub to control smart gadgets at home, just like what Amazon Echo can do, according to reports.

With the “HomeHub” feature added to Windows 10, the operation system will be able to control devices from Philips Hue, Nest, Wink, among other third-party devices.

Users can also make voice commands using Microsoft’s Cortana voice assistant, so that thermostats, lights, etc. can all be adjusted remotely. The company is reportedly working with HP and Lenovo to integrate the smart feature, according to the media outlet.

Another change will be a new welcome screen that is ‘always on’ to grant family members access to calendars, to-do list and notes. The always-on feature is reportedly designed for new, smaller hardware that can be rolled out in the holiday season in the fourth quarter.

Microsoft’s plan for supporting smart devices looks very similar to Apple’s Home app, with the ability to manage and control smart devices directly within Windows 10.

“Microsoft appears to be readying Windows 10 for future devices that are similar to Amazon’s new Echo Show hardware, with easy access to voice search, calling, and smart device control. Microsoft’s differentiator is that it wants these devices to be considered full Windows 10 PCs,” The Verge reported.

Microsoft is considered a late comer in this new home automation market. Amazon has so far led this space with its popular Echo speakers which are already compatible with thousands of third-party devices. Google trails behind with its smart speaker Google Home. Apple and Microsoft lag further behind in the field, but Apple may introduce its smart speaker at its developer conference next month, according to a market source.

Microsoft is holding a special event on May 23 in Shanghai where it’s planning to “show the world what’s next.” It is believed Microsoft will use the venue to further push its smart home endeavor.
