For those who have security cameras from Ring, Arlo, Nest, EZVIZ, Vivint Smart Home, Amcrest, Logitech or August, they will be able to view live feeds on their Fire TV devices while relaxing in the living room, instead of checking the feeds on mobile phones.
This is not the first time that Amazon enabled video features in its devices. The newly released Echo Show, equipped with a touchscreen, can connect with
home security cameras and present live feeds.
For Echo users who don’t have video-equipped device, they can instead listen to audio feeds on the regular Echo or Dot, by simply saying the command “Alexa, show the front door.”
With the new Alexa support for Fire TVs, Amazon finally allows users to control TV hands-free. Various commands are available for the entertainment device, including “Alexa, show me some action movies” or “Alexa, open Hulu.”
Users will need to pair their Echo devices with Fire TV first. The setup process can be completed by asking Alexa a question that includes the phrase “Fire TV.” Those who have more than one Echo devices at home are required to use the Alexa app.
Alexa hands-free commands have greater capabilities for users owning a Fire TV Edition smart TV. Volume control, input switching and changing the channel are being supported, for example.
Some rivals of Amazon Fire TV like Sony Smart TV are also Alexa-compatible. Google Chromecast also supports hands-free experience with Google’s own AI-powered voice assistant.
The update has been rolled out in the United States, and will be available on all Fire TVs, Fire TV Sticks and Fire Edition smart TVs. The home security camera support will be added in the next update.
