Philips Hue is more than a smart bulb; it is a whole smart home system. The system requires the use of a Hue Bridge, which can support up to 50 light bulbs. Setup is easy and users may even sync the light bulbs with music and movies.


The starter kit comes with four screw-fit light bulbs that can be adjusted from a smartphone app. With all shades of white light and 16 million colors to choose from, there are limitless possibilities to remake the look in a room.

The product is known for its wide device compatibility and interoperability with other apps. Light color, brightness and scheduling can all be controlled remotely over the Internet.

This means users can just buy one bulb to get started with the smart home experience right away. A single bulb contains all the technology and hardware needed to use the lights.


LIFX can integrate with other smart products at home, and works with Amazon Echo, Google Assistant, Samsung SmartThings, Nest and IFTTT.

The LIFX App, which is available on Android, iOS and Windows 10, is packed with features and effects like music visualizer, themes, scenes and schedules.

Homeowners can use voice control to turn on and off lights, change the brightness, make the light warmer or swap to preferred colors. There are 16 million colors and warm to cool whites. The brightness level is equivalent to 75W bulb.
 

GE C-Life

The light bulb is very bright, making it good for ceiling fixtures. The app is easy to use and includes a few pre-selected lighting settings. The device connects to a smartphone via Bluetooth, and as such, no hub or gateway is required. However, it also means remote control is impossible when users are not at home or out of range.


Features include instant adjustment or dimming of brightness levels for each occasion or activity; creating schedules and groups to control multiple bulbs at the same time.

Users may create custom scenes like movie time or homework hour. Control can be set up to let user control everything from anywhere in the home – from the couch to the kitchen. It can be set up in such a way that all the lights will be switched on before homeowners step through the front door.

Indoor floodlight with tintable white light, and voice control via C-Reach smart bridge are coming soon, according to GE.
 

IKEA Tradfri Gateway Kit

The Gateway Kit is designed for beginners who want to try out smart home. The intuitive app allows users to modify brightness, set routines and experiment with different color temperatures.


The app’s main screen shows the lighting groups. From there users can adjust brightness and the color temperature of all the bulbs in a particular group.

The kit comes with two E26 Tradfri bulbs. Low-priced individual Tradfri bulbs allow for a more affordable smart lighting expansion in the future.

The light bulb only gives white color. Users may toggle between warmer and cooler tones on their phone. A hub is enclosed but users can control the lights using their phone only when connected to the same Wi-Fi network. The enclosed remote control offers an alternative means of control.

The remote control is a small disc with the power button in the middle, surrounded by four additional buttons. The top and bottom control brightness, while the left and right cycle through color temperature.
 

Xiaomi Yeelight

The LED light bulb features 16 million color RGB lights and 1700-6500K adjustable white light. It is Wi-Fi enabled to allow remote control from a mobile phone.


The product works with MIJIA, IFTTT and Amazon Alexa voice control. With IFTTT, user may have the light turned on automatically every time they are tagged in a Facebook photo. In another example, homeowners can set the lights to be turned on if motion is detected in the home.

The Yeelight Smart LED Bulb accompanies users in different occasions, while reading a book, relaxing before going to bed or getting ready for a festive event. A handy feature is the ability to set a default brightness and color when the main light switch is turned off and back on again.

To ensure safety, special technologies are enabled to offer lightning protection, overheating protection and overload protection.
 

TP-Link LB130

TP-Link offers a selection of five different smart bulbs, which don’t require a smart hub to function. It connects to home Wi-Fi network, and through the Kasa app, users can control light color and brightness, set schedules and scenes, and track energy used.


Connectivity is reliable and the Kasa app works Android and iOS devices to allow for remote control from a smartphone or tablet. TP-Link products can work with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for voice control.

The color changing LB 130 model lets users change the color and intensity, navigate the tunable white light from warm to cool. The smart bulbs can be controlled separately or as a group.

The Circadian Mode automatically matches light to the time of day by adjusting brightness and warmth as the sun rises and sets.

The company claims to reduce energy use by 80% compared to a 60W incandescent bulbs, and can last 22.8 years.
 

Elgato Avea

Avea connects to iPhone, iPad or Android phone using Bluetooth Smart technology, with requiring additional gateways or bridges. Once users have selected a light scene, the smart LED lights will take care of the rest, not requiring a constant connection to the mobile device.


Avea works especially well with Apple Watch, from which users can view the current status of Avea at a glance and make lighting adjustment with a simple tap.

The 7W LED screw-in bulb has a class A energy rating. Users may set a static color or change from one of seven themes, which slow flow through preset colors.

It features a built-in wake-up light scene to function like an alarm. The lighting will mimic a natural sunrise in the bedroom to help users wake up.

With more than one Avea device connected, they will automatically coordinate lighting to create an immersive atmosphere.

The night light mode will be switched on at night to enable clear image recording. There is built-in microphone for audio recording. Push notification will be sent to user’s smart device when motions are detected in the house.
