Vimar: Energy management is at the core of home automation

Vimar is an Italy-based company that provides residential, commercial and marine automation solutions based on KNX, EnOcean and two-wire bus technologies. The company provides energy management, control, security, and safety product lines.

Since its first home and building automation system launched in 2005, the company has placed much effort on the development towards energy efficiency. The company offers comprehensive home automation products, including smart lighting, climate control, timer thermostats, video doorphone and entry systems, burglar alarm, video surveillance products and cover plates. It provides premium products for luxury homes. By far, its products are exported to around 110 countries, with main export markets in Europe, the Middle East and South America. The company has high commitment to aesthetical quality, technological innovation and simple installation of products.

Sharing his perspective on the home automation market in Europe, Business Development and Marketing Director Giovanni Gambin mentioned that wired solutions still dominate the European market, amongst which energy efficiency is considered the biggest market driver.

“Design, Innovation, Integration and Quality Made in Vimar … this is the fil rouge of a brand with more than 70 years of history. Surely, our new full IP-based video door entry system represents all this, marking another important step towards the whole integration of Vimar equipment,” said Gambin.

In early 2015, Vimar launched a new Wi-Fi timer thermostat which is able to talk locally and remotely with smartphones and tablets. With regard to product development, he mentioned that new low-cost home automation – those that are easy-to-install and pre-configured – are real alternatives to the traditional electrical installation. In terms of future product development, the company is working hard to further integrate their solutions with household electrical appliances, cars and grids.

Commenting on the market driver in Europe, Gambin believes Germany is one of the most important and significant markets for home and building automation along with the UK, Italy and France when it comes to the smart home market. The automated systems are believed to help achieve energy efficiency. Automatic and intelligent controls have been implemented to improve the efficiency and help people to better manage all the resources like water, gas and electricity.

“Propelled by the European community Horizon 2020 program and the development of Nearly Zero- Energy Building (NZEB), automation systems are becoming an important driver to warrant the interoperability of all the systems especially in Europe. In the rest of the world, drivers which are pushing people to buy an automation system are not necessarily energy saving but comfort, design and ease of use,” explained Gambin. "Moreover, the smart home market is boosted by the Internet of Things development and pushed by big electronic consumer players such as Samsung, Apple and Google,” he added.

“The wired ones remain the most widely-adopted and reliable solutions for electrical installers and system integrators in new buildings. Today, the percentage of wireless product sales stands less than 5 percent of the entire home and building automation systems market in Europe. Gambin sees the wireless solution trend has become an important choice for the retrofit and new home automation consumers market. “End users are paying more and more attention to wireless systems, especially plug-and-play equipment. Meanwhile, more professionally-installed solutions have been introduced for refurbishment than new installations at present,” concluded Gambin.
