U.S. telecommunication company T-Mobile revealed its in-home 5G internet service plan in a statement to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), according to media sources.
T-Mobile is waiting for the permission to merge with Sprint and to form the New T-Mobile, says Fierce Wireless. After the merger, the New T-Mobile wants to offer in-home 5G plans with 100 Mbps download speed, and then increase the speed to between 300 Mbps and 500 Mbps by 2024.
U.S. households don’t have many options in terms of home internet providers. T-Mobile predicts it will gain 1.9 million in-home wireless broadband customers by 2021 and 9.5 million by 2024, making it the fourth-biggest internet service provider in the U.S., behind Comcast and Charter. T-Mobile expects its network and in-home internet service to cover 52% of all zip codes in the U.S. by 2024.
The company wants to offer 5G home internet without asking homeowners to install equipment by professionals, which will save the setup cost. The goal is to give customers “self-provision the necessary in-home equipment,” T-Mobile says.
“New T-Mobile will also enable consumers to use their mobile services as a substitute for in-home broadband,” wrote Mike Sievert, COO of T-Mobile, in the statement to the FCC.
Sievert further explained that T-Mobile’s in-home 5G internet service won’t ask for contracts or require strict monthly data plans from users.
5G, an advanced communication upgrade from the current 4G LTE, offers a faster internet download and upload speed, making it possible to support streaming services for one household and to replace the current broadband internet service.
Another U.S. telecommunication firm Verizon unveiled its in-home 5G internet service earlier this month, which will be delivered to homes by small cells instead of the current wired infrastructure.
Verizon’s 5G Home service will be provided for free for the first three months, and then it will cost US$50 per month for existing Verizon customers and US$70 for new customers. The service will go live on October 1 in four U.S. cities - Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles and Sacramento.
T-Mobile, on the other hand, hasn’t indicated the exact date when its home 5G internet service will be rolled out.
