Zigbee-enabled lighting market to grow 18% over next 5 years: report

Zigbee-enabled lighting market to grow 18% over next 5 years: report
The Zigbee-enabled lighting market is forecast to grow at an annual compound growth rate of 18.38% between 2017 and 2023
Thanks to growing smart home adoptions, the Zigbee-enabled lighting market is forecast to grow at an annual compound growth rate of 18.38% between 2017 and 2023, according to a recent report published by Research and Markets.

The awareness about energy conservation is also driving the Zigbee market, as the wireless protocol is known for low-power consumption and being adopted in alarm systems, multi-channel control systems, lighting control and other industrial applications.

Government initiatives for smart city project is another factor leading to increasing installation of Zigbee protocol to reduce energy consumption.

Among all the regions, North America has the highest Zigbee applications as this region has maximum industrial automation and higher adoption of smart homes. Moreover, North America has a higher concentration of companies providing Zigbee products and platform solutions. These vendors include large enterprises like Texas Instruments, Microchip technology as well as many start-ups.

Europe is closely behind North America in terms of Zigbee adoption. Europe is a large market for in-car smart devices which use Zigbee for connectivity purposes. Smart homes are also relatively popular in the region, contributing to the growth of the Zigbee market.

Asia Pacific, on the other hand, is expected to be the fastest growing region, largely due to the surging consumer electronics industry and increasing usage of smart devices.

Major players in the Zigbee market include Digi International (U.S.), NXP Semiconductors (the Netherlands), Renesas Electronics (Japan), Microchip Technology (U.S.), STMicroelectronics (Switzerland), Texas Instruments (U.S.), GreenPeak Technologies (the Netherlands) and Silicon Laboratories (U.S.).

Zigbee-based chips to take 85% market share

Zigbee is also on its way to dominate the mesh networking market. A recently published report of ON World predicts that Zigbee-based chips will account for 85% of all chips shipped by 2023, thanks to the adoption by major consumer electronics makers. “Our findings indicate Zigbee leads the wireless mesh sensor network market and will continue to do so,” said Mareca Hatler, a principal analyst at ON World.

Katie Gengler, Zigbee Alliance’s head of marketing, said 2018 has been a record year for Zigbee certifications, with the technology being increasingly applied in the smart home space. According to ON World’s report, Zigbee now makes up more than a third of the smart home wireless sensor network chipset market. Today, Zigbee Alliance-based chips are found in smart home products from Amazon, Comcast, Huawei, Ikea, Signify and Samsung SmartThings.

Zigbee operates on low-frequency bands, such as 2.4 GHz, 868 MHz and 914 MHz, so it can avoid congestion in network traffic while providing a secure connection. Apart from it, unlike Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, Zigbee is more energy efficient.

Moreover, Zigbee does not have a central controller, and the loads are distributed evenly across the network. Zigbee is also a cost saving solution and therefore, the adoption of Zigbee is higher compared to other technologies like NFC and Wi-Fi.

On the basis of application, the market is segmented into home automation, industrial automation, telecommunication services, healthcare, retail services and smart energy which is further segmented into smart grid and smart metering and others.
