The challenge
South Montgomery County Emergency Services District (ESD) 8 serves a sizeable portion of one of the fastest-growing counties in Texas. As the area population expands, ESD 8 grows along with it — adding new fire stations across its coverage area to watch over and protect its neighbors. But who’s watching out for the fire stations?
With its first fire station, ESD 8 recognized it needed a comprehensive solution for security, video surveillance and fire detection. It also needed a monitoring and management partner, as fire station staff rightly focused their attention on the needs of their communities. And ultimately, ESD 8 needed an approach that could scale to encompass future stations as South Montgomery County continues to grow.
The solution
ESD 8 turned to Knight Security Systems to provide a fire detection and alarm solution for its first location on Volunteer Lane. As ESD 8 continued to expand and open additional stations, it became clear that the district needed scalable, enterprise-class video surveillance, fire detection and alarms, and an access-control solution. Plus, with station personnel focused on their core duties, ESD 8 needed the ability to manage all of these systems from its administrative offices.
Knight designed and installed a comprehensive video surveillance plan with approximately 100 cameras across five facilities, with an Exacqvision Video Monitoring System to make camera views accessible from from any location. Knight also installed an S2 access control system to support roughly 50 doors, with a unified management dashboard that’s easily accessible via web browser. For fire detection and alarms, ESD 8 and Knight opted for cost-effective, non-proprietary Silent Knight solutions from Honeywell International.
Knight’s integrated solution is designed to be highly scalable, allowing ESD 8 to grow as needed. The design even anticipates future connectivity — as district systems migrate from wireless to fiber-based systems, Knight solutions are ready. ESD 8 also selected Knight SecurePlan services for proactive and preventive maintenance, rapid response and maximum uptime.
