FenceSafe, a revolution in temporary fencing has allowed Erith Contractors to offer heritage protection fencing around monuments and entrance ways at the site of the world’s oldest gasholder. The 17-acre site, located at Fulham Gasworks has been scheduled for decommissioning and demolition since plans were approved for a new multimillion pound mixed use residential-led development.

Erith Contractors, a framework contractor for site owners National Grid were appointed to decommission the site ahead of the full demolition. Due to a number of Grade II listed features on the site; including No2. Gasholder; the oldest one in the world, the Chief Engineer’s Office; built in 1856, a former Research Laboratory from 1927 and two War Memorials from World War 1 and 2, the need for Heritage Protection was of the utmost importance when it came to temporary fencing and access control.

The site was first occupied in 1824 by Gas Light and Coke Company who later went on to be forefather of British Gas, with No2. Gasholder completed in 1830. Due to the long-associated history Hammersmith and Fulham Council has required a dedicated Heritage Protection system to be installed around both of the War Memorials to prevent accidental damage as well at other areas on the site.

FenceSafe was able to offer a full permanent security package in a temporary aspect allowing each monument to receive the best in temporary heritage protection. When finished the project seeks to offer 1,375 homes in blocks of up to 27 storeys high across the site, including new shops, restaurants and office accommodation.
