The Champlain Bridge (French: Pont Champlain) is a steel truss cantilever bridge with approach viaducts constructed of prestressed concrete beams supporting a prestressed concrete deck paved with asphalt. The bridge crosses the Saint Lawrence River and Saint Lawrence Seaway, connecting the Montreal boroughs of Verdun and Le Sud-Ouest to Brossard on the South Shore. Montreal’s climate subjects the Champlain Bridge to wintry cold, snowfall, and windy conditions, all of which accelerate damage to the bridge. It was ultimately determined a major renovation for this main access to Montreal was required. This major construction would require the main access areas to the bridge, the general construction site, and equipment 24/7 surveillance.
The challenge
Champlain Bridge is a bridge that is both under construction and currently in use by the public 24/7; weather notwithstanding. An unsecured site is an invitation to theft of material and equipment. Installing a seamless integration within a highly active construction site along with centralized monitoring was by far, the integrator’s Telecommunications Grimard and ISS greatest challenge.
Why ISS
ISS was chosen because of the proven - robust services SecurOSTM offers. ISS has successful past performances in both Highway and Critical Infrastructure verticals in projects - globally. ISS’ VMS could secure both a seamless and wireless connection for the required
Bosch and
Hikvision camera network at a very active construction site.
The solution
The solution features 24/7 camera surveillance along with centralized monitoring which integrated with the SecurOS VMS. Grimard was very impressed with the proven ability of ISS software to work near total perfection in various weather and lighting conditions.
The results
Implemented and Fully Operational. Storage has been sufficient given the request to have full playback capabilities for incident reviews or other situations. Equipment and material theft is a major source of loss for contractors; having SecurOS in place has saved both the government and contractors thousands of dollars. They have confidence in knowing these construction sites are secure.
The future
Future discussions and solutions include possible LPR monitoring upon bridge construction completion.
