Secure access for Mont Blanc Tunnel staff with Nedap and Selesta

Secure access for Mont Blanc Tunnel staff with Nedap and Selesta
Being one of Europe’s standout tunnels, offering staff highly secure access to restricted areas of the Mont Blanc Tunnel was a main requirement. To provide drivers with secure yet convenient access, Nedap’s TRANSIT solution was implemented. The system was integrated by Selesta Ingegneria S.p.A.
The Mont Blanc is one of Europe's most used tunnels. The road tunnel of 11.6 km-long stretches between the Chamonix Valley in France and the Aosta Valley in Italy. The passageway is one of the major trans-Alpine transport routes. In particular for Italy, which transports one-third of its freight to Northern-Europe via this tunnel. It reduces the route from France to Turin by 50 km and to Milan by 100 km.

Automatic staff access
The authorities responsible for the Mont Blanc Tunnel were in need of a solution that could grant all authorized staff and their vehicles secure access to restricted areas of the tunnel. An important requirement for the access control system, beside the fact that it had to be highly secure, was that it had to be convenient for staff, without the need to stop at the toll gates.

At both the Italian and French side of the Mont Blanc Tunnel, Nedap's TRANSIT readers were installed. This long-range reader identifies vehicles and its drivers up to 10 meters. Even in the most challenging circumstances, such as the rugged environment at a road tunnel, TRANSIT offers highly reliable access to authorized staff and vehicles only.

Driver based vehicle identification
To make sure only valid combinations of drivers and vehicles get access to the restricted zones at the tunnel, Nedap's Prox Booster is used. This in-vehicle transponder contains a vehicle identification number that is combined with identification of the driver's personal identification card.

Thanks to this patented solution, vehicles can never get access to a secured area unless occupied by an authorized driver. It is therefore used to enable secure, fast and convenient vehicle access in high secured areas and in flexible vehicle and driver situations.

This Nedap solution was integrated by Selesta Ingegneria S.p.A. This Italian company develops and supplies time and attendance, access control, and physical security solutions primarily in Italy and France.
