US highway project deployed ALCON wireless transmission systems

US highway project deployed ALCON wireless transmission systems
The highway office is looking for a wireless solution which could provide real time video surveillance of the highway. There are two phases of this project: 1) Monitoring the construction sites, 2) monitoring the traffic when the construction is done.

Requirements and challenges:
The highway office is looking for a wireless solution which could provide real time video surveillance of the highway. There are two phases of this project: 1) Monitoring the construction sites, 2) monitoring the traffic when the construction is done.

In the phase 1, the office demanded real-time monitoring over the four construction sites where no power is available. Thus, a set of solar-powered system which includes the solar panel, charge controller, a timer and a waterproof box for these devices is taking into consideration.

In the phase 2, the system kept on for traffic monitoring once the construction is completed. The purpose is to allow the highway officers get the clear images on highway.

Solution:
The local system integrator selected two models from ALCON: APE-5005 and ALINK-5801a. There are 4 pairs of the APE-5005 gathering at a middle location, each of them connects to IP speed dome by a switch. Then, one set of ALINK-5801a works as a backhaul to send all the video streaming back to the office.

For phase 1, the system integrator had to conduct a site survey to understand the distances of each site, total power consumption and the condition of installation (line-of-sight and height).

They put a timer in the waterproof box which controls to solar charge time and work time, so the system would stop working around sunset.

It becomes easier for phase 2 as the system has been ready to keep working for a long time. All the highway office and system integrator need to decide is using solar system or electricity as power supply on the highway.

Performance feedback:
There's no integration issue as long as all devices are using Ethernet port. The traditional coaxial cable was for analog system and its cable length is limited within 100 meters. As the technology of IP camera is much advanced nowadays, wireless surveillance should be much easier. This is why all the WiFi products from ALCON were designed with such concept for everyone.

Also, as the labor cost is high in the USA, it is very important for system integrator finds a ready-to-use wireless solution which could connect all types of IP camera simply with a switch. Furthermore, the user-friendly interface could save up to 50% of time when the workers are working on the systems configuration.
