Lima is Peru's largest capital and city, as well as the country's economic, political and cultural hub. This January, the city government decided to initiate a safe city video surveillance project using Axxonsoft's VMS. The project is designed to reduce the city's crime rate and aid police investigations.

Lima's largest district, Puerto Libre, was chosen as the starting site of the project. Strategic points in the district are now covered by 42 network cameras for public safety, with many more to be added. Information from all cameras is sent to the central monitoring hub, where the entire system is managed. Completion of the project is slated for June 2013.

According to Rafael Santos, the mayor of Lima, the safe city project in Pueblo Libre has already caused a 40 percent drop in crime, with further improvements to come.
