Brazilian prisons lock down on video quality

Brazilian prisons lock down on video quality
The Department of Justice and Citizenship of the State of Ceara (Sejus-CE) in Brazil deployed an IP surveillance video center at its headquarters in Fortaleza to remotely manage state prisons. The system consisting of the surveillance center and 500 network cameras installed in prisons was implemented by local system integrator Imagem Seguranc at the department headquarters. The solution was complemented by VMS chosen from ISS, which allows for recording preconfigured images and alarms.

Imagem implemented specific models of Axis Communication cameras at the state jails in Crato, Jati and Sobral and Pacatuba State Prison. In the project, there are megapixel cameras to record and analyze multiple scenes. Being a detention environment, it was necessary to introduce an HD remote monitoring system of images recorded in various lighting conditions, and especially to allow for audio recording to video.

The cameras were installed around the prisons' surroundings, external and access areas and also in the administrative area of each unit, including high-speed dome camera with progressive scan 35x zoom, megapixel network camera, 360 degree pan-tilt network camera, small network camera, outdoor PTZ dome with 36x optical zoom and 220 degree tilt, small network HD camera, fixed network camera with D/N, and an HD PTZ dome.

The project has added a number of benefits to Sejus. Among the main ones are highlighted: centralization of video control of the state prison security system; optimizing the productivity of the IT staff; real-time control of prisons; high quality images and system of visual and audible alarms, enabling preventive work in relation to escapes and rebellions.“The surveillance via video surveillance allows Sejus to daily monitor the units, benefiting intelligence and security actions, preventing possible escape attempts or other anomalies in the prison system,“ said Mário Jorge, Project Head at SEJUS, Department of Justice.
