S. African mining operations improve processes and reduce illegal activities using big picture
Integrator e-Thele SQD Networks and CNL Software are working to provide a comprehensive security management system to a global mining organization’s operations in South Africa. CNL’s PSIM software was deployed during the first phase of the project to integrate security systems in the mining estate, which incorporated video surveillance, video analytics, access control, intrusion detection, supervisory control and data acquisition, explained Wolfgang Engling, MD of e-Thele. The system now covers the mining estate, abandoned mines and areas where security staff could not be present at all times.

Integrator e-Thele SQD Networks and CNL Software are working to provide a comprehensive security management system to a global mining organization's operations in South Africa. CNL's PSIM software was deployed during the first phase of the project to integrate security systems in the mining estate, which incorporated video surveillance, video analytics, access control, intrusion detection, supervisory control and data acquisition, explained Wolfgang Engling, MD of e-Thele. The system now covers the mining estate, abandoned mines and areas where security staff could not be present at all times.

Illegal mining operations cost the country an estimated US$5 million per year. In addition, injuries or deaths of illegal miners are considered safety breaches, which negatively impact mining safety records. The CNL software can help reduce theft caused by illegal access and minimize other risks to property, while protecting the health and safety of staff, visitors and the public, Engling said. The system provides control room operators with real-time situational awareness, through a common operating picture following an alert, alarm or trigger, and provides step-by-step guidance to direct response teams over vast areas above and below ground. This approach ensures complete compliance to organizational security, health and safety policies and national requirements.

PSIM deployments in critical national infrastructure projects around the globe help alleviate security challenges, including the protection of personnel, buildings, transportation systems and other critical facilities, which are often located over vast geographical areas, said James Condron, VP of Sales at CNL. “Being able to identify and deal with threats quickly and efficiently means that organizations are reducing costs that would be incurred from theft or major safety incidents.”
