CEM Access Control System Operates at Texas Surgical Hospital

Baylor Medical Center at Uptown is a surgical hospital opening in the Dallas Uptown area in January 2011. Specialties and services will include Orthopaedic, Spine, Pain Management, General, Plastic, Ear, Nose, and Throat surgery.

Putting safety and the care of their patients at the forefront, Baylor Medical Center at Uptown required an access control system which offers integrated biometric security as well as the ability to work with third-party systems. Access Technology Systems selected the CEM security management system to meet these requirements.

CEM fingerprint reader was central to the system design at the Baylor Medical Center. In addition to fingerprint security, the reader features an internal database for offline card validation, a keypad for PIN verification and an LCD for displaying meaningful messages such as ‘card expiring' and ‘access granted'.

“The reason for choosing CEM was based on the strength of readers and their ability to provide integrated template management,” said Jamie Finegan, VP of Business Development at Access Technology Systems. “The integrated biometric system means that staff at the hospital can administrate cardholders via one user-friendly interface, without needing a separate biometric network. Biometric templates are then encrypted and fully distributed from the server to the reader internal database.”

The fingerprint reader will be used to secure critical areas in the hospital including the pharmacy, HR department, central files area, elevators and consultation rooms. For areas where security is less critical, the hospital will be utilizing the CEM Ethernet door control module, an intelligent device which allows third-party read heads to be interfaced directly to the controller. The device also offers offline card validation using an internal database which ensures security measures are operational at all times.

The management system offers the client a solution which provides a variety of applications including alarm event display, an integrated alarm processing application which provides dynamic graphical representation of all system events. In addition, CEM external systems application means that the hospital can interface the management system to their existing VMS without the need for development work.
