Based in Bangkok and serving Southeast Asia, Civil Aviation Training Center (CATC) Thailand is a premier provider of specialized training services primarily focused on the aviation industry. Its approximately 500 employees carry out CATC Thailand’s commitment to providing excellence in aviation training through comprehensive high-quality courses and programs designed to develop skilled professionals in various aviation-related disciplines, including air traffic control, aviation management, and aircraft maintenance.
Challenge
As a specialized aviation education and training center, CATC Thailand houses information on aviation policies and practices with real-world implications for the safety and security of airports, aircraft and the public at large. As such, it has stringent access control and security requirements to ensure adequate protection of the aviation industry’s tightly controlled protocols as well as the safety of its students and employees.
To ensure its responsibility to safeguard its stakeholders across the private and government sectors is upheld, CATC Thailand is undergoing a digital transformation. A critical first step in that initiative was conducting a full security system audit that revealed several areas for improvement in its access control and security.
For example, under the existing smart card access system, there was no security protocol to prevent or detect card duplication. This could potentially result in unauthorized access to CATC Thailand classrooms, laboratories, workshops and other locations that might contain highly advanced, expensive, and irreplaceable machines and devices.
The audit determined that CATC Thailand would be best served by a cohesive digital solution capable of managing and securing campus-wide access. In addition to budget considerations, the ideal solution would be one that aligned with the organization’s short- and long-term digital transformation plan and timeline.
“We wanted the new access control and security system to be future proof for at least the next 10 years and to achieve our vision of students, staff, and employees needing to carry just one card to gain access anywhere across the entire campus. We also want the option to migrate from card access to an app from which access and security could easily be managed,” said Phakanut Makchuy, Vice President of Civil Aviation Training Center Thailand.
Solution
CATC Thailand worked closely with its technology partner, Honor Supplying, to determine which access control solution would successfully integrate with its existing security systems and allow for easy management of identification and credentialling. Honor Supplying, in turn, consulted with HID to create an implementation roadmap that leveraged HID Mobile Access, HID Seos and HID Aero Controller solutions to achieve the digital transformation initiative’s short- and long-term goals.
HID Mobile Access is integrated into a mobile app developed by Honor Supplying for CATC Thailand to address the aviation center’s urgent short-term needs by providing students and employees with tightly monitored access to campus buildings, classrooms, laboratories, research labs, library and lockers. It also tracks attendance and movement on, off and across campus as well as access to common facilities. Through the CATC Thailand bespoke mobile app, HID Mobile Access allows any compatible mobile device to be used as a credential to securely access doors, gates, networks and more, significantly increasing convenience and boosting operational efficiency without compromising security.
HID Seos delivers trusted security and user privacy while offering the flexibility to accommodate organizations as they transition to a more connected world. Pre-printed and used on student IDs and employee badges, Seos provides secure access control and software authentication across the CATC Thailand campus while powering the entire HID ecosystem.
HID Aero is built on an open architecture and features highly durable and reliable hardware, firmware, software library, and tool infrastructure to deliver a future-proof platform that is highly configurable and able to scale in tandem with future needs.
“In the long run, we want to implement a cashless society on our campus where users can pay for services such as printing, parking, and more. HID Mobile Access is the foundation for realizing that vision,” says Makchuy.
Result
HID ecosystem solutions are currently powering access and security across CATC Thailand’s Bangkok campus, managing card and mobile access for 1,000 students and 500 employees. Through integration with the CATC Thailandmobile app, HID Mobile Access is providing secure access to classrooms, laboratories, and offices, and is used to track classroom time attendance, library system usage, elevator access, RFID gates and lockers, and ID card printing
The HID ecosystem will soon be rolled out on the Hua Hin campus, followed by other campuses across the country. Future plans call for broader integration into the CATC Thailand mobile app, allowing users to have full app-based access to campus services, facilities, and applications.
“HID is the technology leader and sets the security standard. Its access card readers are aesthetically beautiful, and able to integrate with many new and old access control and security systems. We like that it is future proof and has incorporated technology for mobile ID with Bluetooth technology for contactless use,” says Makchuy.
