SAIC General Motors discovers complete, integrated access control

SAIC General Motors discovers complete, integrated access control
By switching to Hirsch, SAIC-GM discovered the flexibility and scalability of a fully integrated system. Future expansion plans include another overall system upgrade and the addition of Hirsch Velocity Software for optimum compatibility.
General Motors, one of the world’s largest automakers, traces its roots back to 1908. The General Motors-China relationship dates back more than nine decades. GM China’s vision is to be the most valued automotive company in China. SAIC General Motors (SAIC-GM) is a joint venture between GM and SAIC. SAIC-GM has four major manufacturing bases-Jinqiao in Shanghai, Dong Yue in Yantai, Norsom in Shenyang, and Wuhan-with eight vehicle plants and four powertrain plants.

SAICGM offers over 20 product lines under the Buick, Chevrolet, and Cadillac brands. Its products include luxury vehicles, economy, and premium sedans, MPVs and SUVs, and hybrid and electric vehicles.

Business situation

Between manufacturing bases and plants, SAIC-GM employs a staff of 58,000. Until 2003, SAIC-GM was using Tyco’s Simplex system for access control. Identiv partner and SAIC-GM system integrator Jingqao/Eterna Shanghai proposed a migration to a Hirsch by Identiv integrated physical access control system (PACS), which, at that time, incorporated eight DIGI*TRAC Controllers. Since then, those eight controllers have expanded to over 300 Hirsch Mx-8 Controllers across China.

Technical situation

Previously, SAIC-GM’s physical access control system was operating on three separate servers, making the system and data difficult to manage, monitor, and maintain. By switching to Hirsch, SAIC-GM discovered the flexibility and scalability of a fully integrated system. Future expansion plans include another overall system upgrade and the addition of Hirsch Velocity Software for optimum compatibility.

Solution

Currently, SAIC-GM has over 300 Hirsch Mx-8 Controllers deployed throughout locations across China-95 in a new building in Shanghai, 130 in another building in Shanghai, 30 in Wuhan, 54 in Yantai, and 28 in Shanyang. Award-winning Hirsch Mx provides scalable, networked communication, is available in two, four, or eight supervised door models, and can support up to 4,000 users. Mx-8 supervises eight doors and provides a wide range of features for enterprise-scale solutions encompassing large buildings, campuses, and multi-campus facilities. The modular design and scalable architecture enable an installation to start small and grow large, from a single controller system to a larger, multi-site enterprise.

Over the next 5 to 10 years, SAIC-GM intends to continue to grow its relationship with Identiv and plans an overall system upgrade, including the addition of Identiv’s Hirsch Velocity Software. The Velocity security management system provides the security and functionality expected from high-end systems with the ease-of-use found in entrylevel packages. Velocity is an integrated platform that manages access control and security operations in thousands of different facilities, from single secure rooms to multi-building, multi-location campuses, with the most stringent security compliance. Companies can control doors, gates, turnstiles, elevators, and other equipment, monitor users as they move around a facility, prevent unwanted access, maintain compliance, and provide a robust audit trail.

Benefits

With over thirty-six years of physical security experience, Identiv creates government-grade PACS solutions that are robust, extremely reliable, feature rich, and while designed and developed with the most secure facilities in mind, are priced to install anywhere. Identiv helps protect museums, jails, federal facilities, airports, and automobile manufacturers — anywhere around the world that needs a complete, secure, easy-to-install-and-maintain system. The Mx Controller is the core of the Hirsch PACS portfolio. It is fully firmware, function, and communication protocol compatible to the rest of Identiv’s product line and is designed to seamlessly integrate with Hirsch Velocity Software. This next-generation software platform is designed to deliver unsurpassed security, interoperability, backwards compatibility, and the ability to expand to accommodate the evolution of security technology and business and facility needs.
