Improving fleet management with intelligent transportation systems

Improving fleet management with intelligent transportation systems
Recent development in connected vehicle technology is rapidly transforming transportation systems, creating ample opportunities in the intelligent transportation system markets worldwide. As one of the essential elements to building a smart city, the global ITS market is projected to reach USD 58 billion by 2020. With the number of connected vehicles on the rise, the demand for automotive electronics and telematics solutions is likely to increase accordingly.

Telematics, a technology that integrated telecommunications and informatics to send, receive and store information between remote objects, is changing transport management for the better. Among all the telematics and intelligent transportation technology adaptable sectors, fleet management is expected to benefit the most in terms of reducing operational cost, enhancing driver and asset security and improving customer experience

Reducing operational cost

As one of the major expenses in operational cost, volatile fuel prices are the biggest threat to fleet companies. Therefore, reducing fuel consumption is of great importance to fleet managers, and telematics is the answer. Other than mileage, fuel consumption is also affected by multiple factors such as malfunction of auto parts, bad driving habits and unauthorized use of a vehicle.

Traditionally, vehicle gets sent to auto repair only when a particular auto part is not performing properly. Now with on-board diagnostics telematics system, fleet managers can remotely monitor and obtain information on, for example, mileage, tire pressure, engine hours and fuel level, and use these indicators to have the parts inspected and fixed before they get too worn out or cause serious effects. The transformation from proactive maintenance to reactive repairing is key to reducing downtime and saving cost. On the other hand, fleet managers are now able to use GPS tracking devices to identify employee driving behavior, and eliminate some of the common driving habits that attributed to the increase in fuel consumption, including sudden acceleration, hard braking and idling time. GPS trackers also allow fleet managers to keep track of vehicles’ current locations at any time, preventing unauthorized use of vehicle at unplanned route or during off-hours.

Enhancing driver and asset safety

Driver safety is the fundamental concern of every fleet manager. Some of the major causes of accidents are distracted driving, unsafe following distance, and reckless driving, with some resulted in serious damages to both drivers and assets. One way to change driver's behavior is to use a GPS system to monitor drivers and keep track of speeding, harsh braking, and even if the seatbelt was fasten to encourage drivers to engage in safe driving practices and hold them accountable for risky driving. The other way is to deploy ADAS, the advanced driver assistance system that has proven to be a powerful tool for enhancing driver safety. Some of the applications of ADAS are vehicle detection, blind spot detection, forward collision warning, and night vision, all of which enable vehicle to send warning to drivers when a pedestrian, an object or other vehicle are too close to the vehicle, and to automatically reduce its speed to prevent collision. When an accident occurs, the telematics devices deployed on the vehicle will automatically notify the fleet manager and accident management provider of vehicle condition for immediate response.

Improving customer experience

Customer satisfaction is a critical driver for business growth. For fleet industry, one of the crucial factors for improving customer experience is to strictly follow the scheduled meeting time, whether it’s for picking products, delivering packages or providing services.

Though traffic condition can be predicted with real-time traffic monitoring for drivers to determine whether or not they need to take a different route before dispatching, this scenario is neither practical nor economically efficient when drivers are on the road, and need fleet operator to keep them updated on the traffic information instead of wasting time or risking their lives checking traffic conditions as they go. Thankfully, this problem can now be resolved with GPS technology, which allow fleet managers to pinpoint vehicle’s exact location. After receiving real-time traffic information along with surveillance images in the control center, fleet managers will be able to quickly identify potential traffic corresponding to the vehicle’s current location, and then direct drivers to take a more efficient route using the latest V2X transmission technology. When expecting a potential delay, fleet managers can notify the customer in a timely fashion to manage expectation and arrange other nearby idle vehicle to go in place for a speedier service, achieving customer satisfaction while optimizing vehicle usage.
