Indonesia Smartening up Cities with a Growing ICT Support

In 2015, when the Indonesian government in Jakarta decided to open up a messaging service for citizen grievance, little did anyone think it would pave the way for multi-billion-dollar plans to develop infrastructure in the country. With about a quarter of a billion people living in about 6000 fragmented islands, development in this country has to begin at the most fundamental level.

By 2025, almost 70 percent of people in Indonesia are expected to move to cities. Such rapid urbanization could have major implications on the public infrastructure, straining the system. Smart city projects in Indonesia have been put forward with this concern in mind.
