Synectics, a leader in advanced security and surveillance systems for the oil and gas industry, has launched a suite of powerful AI-powered tools to automate critical risk detection.
Collectively referred to as ‘Synergy DETECT’, the solution is suitable for any setting using Synergy security and surveillance software – from onshore refineries, LNG plants and pipelines to vessels, platforms, FPSOs, and other offshore facilities – and allows operators to activate up to 12 AI-driven tools for enhanced workforce safety and site security.
Protect workers with safety-focussed analytics
PPE Detection is one of the safety-orientated tools available. It automatically generates alerts when workers appear in the frame without protective helmets or high-visibility vests.
Users can also activate a Hazardous Area tool when people or vehicles enter zones designated as dangerous, such as areas surrounding potentially hazardous equipment or processes. This is a valuable capability, given that 25% of oil and gas industry deaths involved machinery last year.
Another essential safety-focused tool is Fall Detection. In the US, a study by the CDC found that slips, trips, and falls account for about 20% of non-fatal injuries in the oil and gas industry. The trend is similar worldwide. This tool will not prevent such falls, but it will help ensure such events are immediately detected, and help is dispatched quickly while also reducing false positives common with more traditional monitoring techniques – for example, radio-integrated man-down sensors.
Quickly detect people or vehicles that don’t belong
Synergy DETECT also features tools for identifying potential security risks.
Intrusion Detection is a good example. It uses detectors with long-range accuracy to identify and classify people or ground vehicles accessing restricted zones – where breaches could threaten operations.
Loitering Detection is also beneficial, especially for monitoring areas where regular comings and goings by people and vehicles are common – including logistics depots and transfer sites. The AI tool can flag suspicious behaviour based on lingering for time periods outside the norm.
Additionally, Multi-Object Detection and Multi-Object Counting mean operators are alerted to vehicles in the wrong place or if they appear at the wrong time – for example, an unscheduled equipment delivery.
Easy set-up, filters, and flexible camera compatibility
Activating Synergy DETECT is simple. Once the hardware is installed, users can connect any of the cameras in their network, including fixed, PTZ and thermal models. The tools can be tailored to suit specific operational needs and re-configured depending on evolving requirements. Settings include zone size, time period, motion tolerances, sensitivity, and alarm frequency thresholds.
Dan Noble, Head of Product Strategy – Synergy, said, “AI truly does have the power to supercharge surveillance-based risk detection, but only if the AI tools themselves are easy and intuitive to use. Synergy DETECT meets this important requirement, putting powerful capabilities at the fingertips of the busy oil and gas surveillance teams protecting our critical assets in a way that is completely tailored to an organisation’s exact needs.”
