Solar-powered video security for SMBs – How Dahua is unlocking one-stop shop solutions for outdoor spaces

Remote-site operators have long faced persistent pain points for which there were few remedies. The assets of such SMBs, often high in value, are in places without the power supply needed for the usual video security systems. Conditions are harsh and in-person maintenance is cumbersome due to the remoteness of their sites— farms, orchards, fish ponds, water conservation facilities, photovoltaics, etc.

With solar-powered Dahua solutions for SMBs, this is a thing of the past. As standalone solutions featuring Dahua’s trusted AI-enabled edge devices, a solar panel and a battery, all integrated into a weather-resistant unit, they offer operators 24/7 oversight of their sites through Dahua Mobile Security Surveillance (DMSS) from their computer at home or smartphone.

Dahua is releasing the new solution at a time when the security camera market has greatly matured across many geographies, providing the availability of high-performing cameras that can detect ever-more accurately, at ever-greater distances and under difficult lighting conditions. What’s often missing, however, are easy-to-install solutions attuned to real-life scenarios and user needs.

Dahua therefore designed its solar-powered solutions not just to address the real-life pain points of off-grid sites, but also to unlock the power of remote-site monitoring to SMB operators who need an economical solution that can be easily operated and maintained.

Tailor-made solutions instead of ‘one-size-fits-all’

Dahua is offering several tailor-made versions based on the needs of the operator:

  • For smaller sites, such as residences or small orchards, the PTS2649 is an all-in-one solar-powered camera equipped with a 65Wh battery and an 8W solar panel. It can be operated through the DMSS professional remote surveillance management platform.

  • For medium-sized sites, the HFW2449 and SDT4E425 are high-performance cameras that come integrated with a 60W 20Ah or a 100W 40Ah solar systems, respectively. The two systems, named 4G IPC and 4G PTZ, are also operated via DMSS.

  • For larger-scale scenarios consisting of multiple sites, the 4G IPC and 4G PTZ systems can be operated via the DSS OneBox, an all-in-one workstation for integrated security solutions.

AI capabilities for remote sites

SMB users also have access to Dahua’s cutting AI. Cameras integrated with the 4G IPC and 4G PTZ feature WizColor, Dahua’s AI-ISP powered optimization technology that enables clear, full-color images even in dimly lit rural environments. Users can benefit from the highest-level of image fidelity, ensuring no detail is lost on them when monitoring their site even at night.

The 4G PTZ additionally features AI analytics powered by Dahua’s proprietary Xinghan Large-Scale AI Models. Users can, for example, benefit from WizTracking, which enables them to track persons and vehicles across their property.

The integration of WizColor and Xinghan is testament to Dahua’s philosophy of continuous improvement to detection distance and accuracy. For users, this means fewer false alarms caused by animals or branches moving in the wind, as well as a higher probability of capturing detailed forensic evidence in the event of a nighttime incident.

While solar-powered solutions for SMBs help users find the perfect version that matches their needs, scalability is central to how Dahua designed them.

“The key is that this is not about separate systems for different stages, but one solution framework that allows customers to start small and expand smoothly within the same technical ecosystem as their business grows,” says Allen Liu, SMB Solution Director at Dahua Technology.

Addressing the bandwidth and power supply challenges

Connectivity is another longstanding pain point for remote-site operators. To square the circle of 24/7 coverage while keeping power consumption in check, Dahua solutions feature Always on Video (AOV) Mode.

This means whenever no unusual activity is detected, the camera records and transmits at a lower framerate, only switching to high frame-rate recording when a target is detected in the surveillance area. This enables continuous site monitoring on the one hand, as well as advanced, comparatively bandwidth-heavy AI features such as perimeter protection or ANPR on the other.

After all, battery life is key to ensuring the systems remain online at all times, even during low-sunshine periods when the battery cannot be recharged. In AOV Mode, the battery of the 4G IPC has a runtime of 10.5 days, while Dahua has pushed this limit to 13.5 days for the 4G PTZ.

Users can monitor the status of their battery in real time through the DMSS or DSS OneBox, as well as the health of their battery, greatly reducing the need for on-site maintenance. Through their remote user interface, they can also manage other functions of their solar-powered unit, including preliminary troubleshooting and restarting the camera in case of a malfunction.

However, Dahua is seeking to reduce the chance of any malfunctioning to a minimum, equipping the devices for operation in challenging conditions, guaranteed by the IP67 protection standard. The devices have an effective temperature range from minus-20°C to 50°C, with automatic and manual lens defrosting and auxiliary heating for the integrated solar panel.

Aside from charging the battery, the solar panel above the camera also acts as a rain shield, protecting the other core components from exposure to the elements that may reduce the lifespan of the unit.

Ruggedized outdoor solutions for all climates

Dahua is confident the new solutions are suitable for a wide range of conditions.

“Are solar-powered devices suitable for different regions, climates, and sunshine conditions? Yes — in a wide range of outdoor scenarios, as long as the system is properly configured for the local environment,” Liu says. “We provide guidance on solar panel angle, panel and battery configuration, and endurance by product, helping customers achieve stable operation in most outdoor conditions.”

Dahua’s solar-powered solutions are available directly through a sales enquiry on the company website, or via its mature global channel network, which gives SMBs access to one-stop services including on-site deployment and after-sales support.

Final thoughts: Giving SMBs access to remote monitoring with solar security cameras

Dahua’s solar-powered solutions represent a significant shift toward scenario-based engineering, providing SMBs with the professional-grade tools needed to protect high-value, off-grid assets.

By combining advanced AI with sustainable power and scalability, these solutions offer a cost-effective path to 24/7 remote monitoring that grows alongside the business needs of SMB users.
