A look ahead: the security industry in 2017
2017 is the 20th anniversary for Genetec, and since our role in the security industry started in 1997, we’ve been instrumental in helping organizations move from analog to Internet Protocol (IP) technology. Early on, we had the intuition and vision to recognize the great potential of multi-point IP networks, starting with video surveillance and later to access control, automatic number plate recognition and an expanding catalog of applications for end users all over the world.

Over the past 20 years, we’ve seen storage capacity, retention periods for captured video data and compression standards grow and evolve. Retention times have gone from a handful of days, to 30 days, and even to storing data for up to 730 days. This is made easier and more affordable via a mix of on-premises storage and the use of the Cloud or hybrid-cloud storage solutions.

In 2017, Genetec continues to provide its customers with its flagship unified, open-architecture IP security technology software known as Security Center. Because of our open IP architecture, we are able to produce new features and functionalities for the security industry. We now offer applications engineered for specific purposes, and in the past nine months, we’ve introduced a decision support system for intelligent incident management called Mission Control, a collaborative case management application called Genetec Clearance, and a new retail intelligence application that allows end users to use their existing security infrastructure to analyze business patterns and transform the customer experience.

Genetec is also working diligently with its integrators and customers to raise the awareness of cybersecurity. We must all take the responsibility of assuring cameras and sensors have unique passwords, with frequent firmware updates. The responsibility lies with the software and hardware manufacturers, as well as the integrators who sell, install and operate this new technology.

Cyberthreats to security have grown over the years via the increased interconnectivity made greatly possible by the Internet of Things (IoT). With many new sensor hardware devices now on the market, often with little or no network protection, our major concern across the board is cybersecurity and the growing need for cyber insurance protection.

Privacy in 2017
Through our close development relationship with KiwiSecurity, a video analytics and privacy company, we are now the leading globally recognized authority on privacy masking and analytics. The process of privacy masking can automatically obscure individuals and vehicles through pixilation in live and recorded video. Our tools assure that a fully visible, high- resolution version is also captured, encrypted and stored while the real-time masked feed is monitored.

2017 will be a big year for Genetec to help its customers “harden” their systems against criminal cyber activity, protect privacy, develop business strategies that utilize the data collected in their systems and collaborate with other organizations. We will continue to support all our end users as they protect the things that matter most, protecting the everyday.
