[Press Release] U.S. Patent Granted for Distributed Biometric Encryption Technology

“Innovative data fragmentation method enhances security and privacy in biometric authentication”
· Encrypts and periodically re-encrypts fragmented biometric templates
· Prevents template reconstruction even in case of data breach or leakage
· Developed under the national R&D program funded by the Korean Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT): “Operating System for Integrated Physical Security in Non-Face-to-Face Services”
· Applicable across mobile authentication, access control, and financial security solutions

UNION biometrics announced that it has been granted a U.S. patent for its distributed biometric template encryption technology, designed to strengthen data protection and privacy in authentication systems.

The patented approach divides biometric templates into multiple encrypted fragments and applies periodic re-encryption and rotation to each piece, ensuring that no single dataset contains a complete biometric profile.

Unlike conventional systems, this method makes reconstruction of original biometric data virtually impossible even if a partial data breach occurs. The company expects the technology to significantly enhance the integrity of biometric systems used in enterprise and government sectors.

“This patent marks a milestone in overcoming the long-standing vulnerabilities of biometric authentication by distributing and encrypting data at the source,” said a UNION biometrics spokesperson. “We are moving quickly to integrate this innovation into our commercial products to help customers achieve stronger security assurance.”

The patented technology was developed under a national R&D program funded by the Korean Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT), titled “Operating System for Integrated Physical Security in Non-Face-to-Face Services.”

As part of the initiative, UNION biometrics, in collaboration with the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA), built a smart-building security platform integrating physical and digital security management.

UNION biometrics plans to implement the patented technology across its core product lines, including mobile authentication, industrial and enterprise access control, and financial security solutions.
The company aims to strengthen its competitiveness in global markets, particularly in the United States, where data protection and compliance are key differentiators.

Building on this patent achievement, UNION biometrics will continue expanding its R&D in secure, scalable, and interoperable biometric architectures.
The company also intends to collaborate with industry partners and regulators to establish distributed biometric template management as a best practice for Zero Trust-based security frameworks.
