16-channel standalone DVRs are stable and easy-to-operate. In China, market share of 16-channel standalone DVRs is increasing because of good cost-to-performance ratios. Chinese manufacturers, such as Dahua, Dwell, Jinsong, Hanbang, Higheasy and RaySharp, have come out with flexible, stable products. Embedded and easy-to-operate, they are suitable for multiple-site monitoring via networking. Common features include remote control, eight-alarm input and four-alarm output.
With major technological improvements taking place in hardware compression
MPEG, MPEG-4, H.264 and the latest DSP chip processing ,many Chinese manufacturers have developed 16-channel standalone DVRs with real-time playback, CIF, NTSC and PAL, VGA, PTZ, and CD-RW and DVD-RW backup. These features give 16-channel standalone DVRs an edge over PC-based ones in terms of stability and flexibility.

To meet demand of high-definition images and long storage times, HighEasy has implemented an enhanced H.264 algorithm to update universal embedded hard-disk recorders. The company has also launched a professional embedded hard-disk recorder, its HY-90BYBYseries, for the financial vertical. It needs only half to two-thirds the HDD space when saving images of a similar definition. Alternatively, it provides better images but with the same storage size.

Dwell's DVR6116-1-1-1-1 is a 16-channel standalone DVR with H.264 compression and four IDE interfaces. It supports VGA, PTZ, multi-user IE browser, USB and CD-RW backup. Video signal is 625 lines and 50 frames per second in PAL, 525 lines and 60 frames per second in NTSC. Composite video input is 1.0 Vp-p 75 (16 BNC connectors); output is 1.0 Vp-p 75 (one BNC). It supports eight-channel alarm input and four-channel output. The alarm includes sensor input, video detection, video sight loss and disk-full warning.
Display resolution is 704 pixels by 576 pixels. Image resolution (CIF) is 352 pixels by 288 pixels; in half-D1, it is 704 pixels by 576 pixels; in D1, it is 704 pixels by 576 pixels. The DVR has four IDE interfaces expandable to eight hard-disk drives (more than 300 gigabytes). It also has two 128-bit data encryption password management security functions and one RS485 communication interface.

It has four-channel audio inputs and one-channel output. Display frame rate is 240 frames per second in NTSC; in PAL, it is 200 frames per second. Recording frame rate is CIF and half D1.
Display resolution is 720 pixels by 80 pixels in NTSC; in PAL, it is 720 pixels by 576 pixels. Recording resolution is 720 pixels by 480 pixels, 720 pixels by 240 pixels, and 360 pixels by 240 pixels (NTSC); in PAL, it is 720 pixels by 576 pixels, 360 pixels by 288 pixels, and 720 pixels by 288 pixels.
Recording is continuous, time schedule, motion detection and sensor triggered.
The devices are also highly integrated and reliable. Video compression is H.264 maximum in D1 (704 pixels by 576 pixels in PAL, 704 pixels by 480 pixels in NTSC) and audio compression (G.722). Video input and output support PAL and NTSC systems. Audio input is 16 channels; output is one channel. It also supports real-time and VGA display as well as featuring a real-time operating system and eight SATA hard disks. The IO port is RS-485/RS-232 and the network port is an adaptable Ethernet port (10M/100M).
Recording includes manual video, timing video, motion detection and warning video with playback modes of speeding, slowing, playback, pausing and forwarding.
