Beep-beep. Honk-honk. The typical sounds you will hear almost nonstop on a highway in Asia, made even worse during rush hour. Filled to the brim, there is both a driving need as well as potential for further enhancement of the transportation infrastructure across Asia, especially in China, Southeast Asia, and Taiwan, said Alan Luo, VP of Gorilla Technology group. “With the rapid growth in affluence among average households and increases in car purchases and car usages, as well as the increasing distances between affordable housing and places of work, there is a shift towards greater personal use of cars for daily transport,” he elaborated.

“Video analytics can play a significant role in reducing accidents and improving traffic flow,” Luo said. He further pointed out that Gorilla Technology has identified four key areas where analytics can solve existing highway traffic problems: intelligent transport systems (ex. Traffic flow and congestion monitoring), law enforcement use (license plate recognition), electronic law enforcement (speeding vehicles), and gateway control (ETC payment systems). By utilizing these technologies, “Either in combination or individually, it allows traffic management departments to more easily monitor and respond to issues that can affect the smooth flow of traffic, such as changes in weather, reckless drivers, vehicle breakdowns, or in identifying animals or people on the roadways. In each case, intelligent video analytics minimizes the reliance on human monitoring and provides a cost-effective method of reviewing thousands of video cameras day and night and for all kinds of environmental conditions.

By further expanding on intelligent video solutions, highly urbanized cities around the globe are further transforming into so-called “smart cities”, where video analytics are being more utilized to monitor and secure the millions of people that live in each city. Traffic management and public safety in smart cities plays an even bigger role, as by being key forms of national transport infrastructure, a nation’s highways represent the heart of daily economic activity, Luo explained.
