NGCP to build new substation in Philippines

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said that it will construct a new 230-kiloVolt (kV) substation in Pasay City to anticipate an increase in power demand from the area.

Before the construction starts, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has to issue first a provisional authority, the private company said.

Once issued, the provisional authority will allow NGCP to build and connect the proposed substation to the existing Las Piñas Substation through an 8.1-kilometer overhead transmission line.

Both substations, as well as the Muntinlupa Substation in Parañaque, serve Manila Electric Company (Meralco).

The proposed project is to be located within the reclamation area in Pasay City and will be housed inside a two-story building, along with other associated substation control and protection system.

"One of the major considerations for the project is the growth in power demand in the Metro Manila area. It is also a long-term solution to the forecasted loading issue of the Las Piñas Substation after 2017. This project is also in compliance with the N-1 contingency requirement of the Philippine Grid Code," said NGCP President and CEO Henry Sy Jr.

NGCP said it is eyeing to start pre-construction activities in 2014 to meet its target completion date in 2018.
