Indonesia's Matahari Dep't Store opens new branch in mall

Matahari Department Store, one of Indonesia’s largest department store operators, opened its 127th outlet at Lippo Mall Puri at St. Moritz, a mall located in West Jakarta, the company said in a statement.
The retailer seeks to capitalize on the mall’s strategic location on the Jakarta-Tangerang-Merak toll road.
“MDS Lippo Mall Puri at St. Moritz is expected to have a positive effect on citizens in the surrounding area, especially as it will engage with almost 550 employees from the local population,” MDS director Andre Rumantir said in the statement.
“The presence of MDS in Jakarta, which offers job opportunities for young workers, is expected to reduce unemployment in this area. Thus citizens’ wealth and quality of life will increase,” Andre said.
Supported by almost 200 of suppliers from all over Indonesia, and with a 10,000 square meter shopping area at the mall, MDS offers a wide selection of fashion products for all. Other products on offer include accessories, cosmetics, shoes, bags and household appliances.
The company said in the statement the capital outlay for each MDS store ranges between Rp 20 billion and Rp 30 billion ($1.7 million to $2.5 million).
Matahari booked total sales of Rp 12.7 trillion last year compared with Rp 10.8 trillion in the previous year, the company said.
The store will offer special promotions from opening day until Sunday, which will allow customers to get buy one item and get one free.
Matahari and the Jakarta Globe are both affiliated with the Lippo Group.
